Living family history hobbies such as photograghy, scrapbooking, journaling, and memory quilt making go hand in hand with genealogy. We are making the heirlooms that future family historians will find and extract the details of our lives from. It will be much more difficult for our descendants to learn about us without these heirlooms.
I have been privileged to make several memory quilts from t-shirts that really capture the essence of the history of individuals. This “quilt form” is really growing on me. It doesn’t take as much time as traditional quilting. (Although, I love all quilting.) It puts clothes that may go to the garbage to a good repurposed use. You don’t need a special sewing machine to stitch these quilts.
Memory quilts help folks relect on a time in their lives or the life of a loved one. They can include t-shirts, sweatshirts, patches, badges, and lots of other items. They can be organized or “grab-bag” style. Memory quilts can feature, a baby, a graduation, a sport, or hobbies. Memory quilts can memorialize anything but they all will be heirlooms.
